Path to Economic Development – Entrepreneurship in Ethiopia
A Documentary by Samrach Film Production for the Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC)
Overview
Samrach Film Production collaborated with the Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) to produce Path to Economic Development, a documentary-style video spotlighting the essential role of Ethiopian entrepreneurs in driving inclusive economic growth. This film tells the story of a nation investing in its own talent — highlighting how local startups, microenterprises, and innovators are creating jobs, building resilience, and shaping the future of Ethiopia’s economy.
Project Objectives
The objective was to communicate the mission and tangible impact of EDC’s efforts to foster entrepreneurship as a national development strategy. Through the voices of emerging business owners, community leaders, and EDC program participants, the video aimed to inspire stakeholders to support the country’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem — from policymakers and development partners to aspiring young innovators.
Project Scope & Strategy
Samrach handled the full production process, from scripting and filming to voiceover recording and post-production editing. The strategy was to use real-life testimonials and business case studies to make abstract policy goals feel human and achievable. We chose a documentary approach with grounded narration and on-site interviews to emphasize the authenticity of EDC’s work and the local ownership of success stories.
Design & Production
Filmed across several Ethiopian regions, the documentary features entrepreneurs working in industries like textile production, technology, agriculture, and urban services. Our cinematography focused on capturing both the ambition of the entrepreneurs and the practical realities they face. Wide shots of workshops, retail spaces, and startup incubators were paired with close-ups of product making, interaction, and training sessions — creating a dynamic and hopeful visual rhythm.
Post-Production
Post-production included voiceover narration, subtitling, and a carefully curated soundtrack that evoked progress and optimism. Graphical elements such as statistics and program highlights were blended subtly with live footage to reinforce the message. The tone was encouraging yet grounded — showing both potential and perseverance.
Distribution & Promotion
The final video was screened at national entrepreneurship forums, donor briefings, and EDC-led training events. It was also published on digital platforms as part of EDC’s broader awareness and advocacy campaigns. Its message continues to be relevant in promoting entrepreneurship as a key pillar of Ethiopia’s path toward sustainable development.
Lessons Learned
This project highlighted the transformative power of storytelling in shifting public perception of entrepreneurship — from a survival tactic to a viable and vital engine of economic progress. We also saw that putting real entrepreneurs at the center of the story creates stronger emotional connection and trust, especially when paired with a clear vision for national development.
